How Does Recycling Help The Environment?

recycling is good for the environment

With dwindling natural resources, unprecedented levels of pollution and overflowing landfills, recycling has become the most practical solution to environmental degradation. With recycling, we can make re-use some of the products instead of manufacturing new ones. So, how does recycling help the environment?

Well, there are many ways that recycling is positively impacting the environment. In this handy guide, we have rounded up some of the ways that recycling what is considered waste is making the planet safer. Here are 10 ways recycling is helpful to the environment:

1. Preserves Natural Resources

The exploitation of natural resources is a major threat to the environment. A good example is the global warming problem, which is caused by the depletion of natural green cover. Deforestation has been one of the biggest threats to the planet. But for as long as there is a rising demand for timber, then the problem will persist. However, recycling wood products helps to reduce the pressure on forests and allow the green cover to grow back. Similarly, recycling of other waste products such as plastic, glass and metal is also helping to reduce the exploitation of natural resources.

2. Saves Energy

One of the biggest damages to the environment is the high consumption of energy. We use a lot of energy to extract the raw materials, transport them to the factory and in processing them. The process requires the burning of a lot of energy, and that means more damage to the environment. By embracing recycling, we can skip most of the production process hence reducing the amount of energy used. Do you know that recycling aluminum saves about 95% of the energy? Well, that’s the kind of impact recycling makes to the environment.

3. Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The biggest factor causing global warming is the increased greenhouse gas emissions. With the increase in the number of industries, the amount of greenhouse gas emitted to the atmosphere has continued to increase. That’s what makes the planet warm. But the entire process of extracting natural raw material to producing the final product is responsible for this. Although we cannot get rid of greenhouse gas emissions, we can reduce the amount to less destructive levels by embracing recycling. With recycling, we can manage to reduce global carbon footprint; hence, making the planet safer.

4. Reduced Pollution

One of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution is waste products. The most significant one is the plastic waste because of its non-biodegradable properties. It has been proven that it takes 100 to 1000 years for the plastic material to decompose completely, as per environmental science and pollution research. That’s why every country, including Australia, is shocking with plastic waste in their landfills. By recycling plastic and other forms of wastes, we will be able to reduce pollution by a significant amount.

5. Keeping Plastic Out of the Ocean

One of the big challenges that the world is dealing with today is plastic in the oceans. According to various studies, it has been found that we have tons of plastic finds their way into the oceans every year. What plastic pollution does is endangering marine life. We have seen cases where marine animals, including whales, have been found dead with traces of plastic in their bodies. The most worrying thing is how this carcinogenic waste finds its way back to us in the form of seafood. So, with recycling, we will be able to keep plastic out of the ocean to keep marine life safe.

6. Protecting Wildlife

Exploiting natural resources harms wildlife. When we cut trees, we leave most of the animals that relied on the forest for food and habitat for dead. In addition to that, we also expose wildlife to pollution when we dispose of waste products. For example, we dispose of plastics in the ocean or at landfills, it possible for the wildlife to eat them up, and this causes death. This is a problem we can reverse by recycling waste.

7. Protecting People

The biggest casualties of ever the increasing environmental degradation is the people. Global warming is a clear indication of how human suffers as a result of environmental damage. The draughts and harsh weather conditions are already killing people. The exploitation of the resources also affects people directly, especially the poor in the areas of interest. For example, people living in the forest get displaced when harvesting timber. So, by embracing recycling, we keep people protect. Other wastes such as plastics cause serious health conditions such as cancer. So, recycling help keep people and the environment healthy.

8. Reduced Landfill Waste

Landfills are a big threat to the environment. With almost every waste product find its way to the places, they become highly polluted, communities surrounding it feels the impact. Due to the vaster range of waste thrown into landfills, they end reducing poisonous gases, including acidic gases. Some of the gases cause breathing problems. So, by recycling, we will be able to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. That will go a long way to keeping the environment safe.

a woman standing on a pile of waste

9. Reduces Incineration

The most common way of dealing with waster, even in landfills, is incineration. That is where the waste is burnt. However, the process is destructive to the environment. With the most common waste being plastic, the process generates carbon emission into the atmosphere. In addition to that, it requires a lot of energy in incinerate waste. Therefore, the overall process will end up creating a pollution problem. By having most of the recyclable waste reused, we can reduce cases of incineration.

10. Saves Yards Landfill Space

We may want to paint landfills good, but it’s an environmental problem. In fact, we shouldn’t even be having these landfills at all. A landfill is simply a wasted piece of land that can be used to improve the environment. But with recycling, we can reduce the amount of land under landfills. We can reclaim the land by planting trees to create forests.

Recycling has numerous benefits for the environment. It helps to preserve natural resources and combating global warming, amongst others. That’s why we should encourage all initiatives geared towards recycling, even at home level. It is beneficial for you and everyone else on this planet.

Tips To Avoid GMO Food

tips to avoid gmo food

The debate about the safety of GMO food is not going away any time soon. But with all the conflicting information about genetically modified food, it is only wise you avoid this food until everything regarding its safety cleared. But what are GMOs exactly?

What is GMO Food?

GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are food that has been modified in the laboratory by inserting genes from other species to obtain the desired characteristics. The main thing that scientists are looking for is fasting growing food, pest resistance foods, high yielding food, and other traits that improve food production at a lower cost.

Dangers Of GMO Food

Proponents of GMOs foods says that the food is safe for human consumption. However, critics believe that bringing GMOs in the food supply exposes human foods to serious health hazards. Studies on several animals have shown that genetically modified food can cause immune problems, faulty insulin regulation, accelerated aging, and infertility, amongst others. These are some of the reasons why you should avoid them.

7 Tips To Avoid GMO Food

Although cotton and canola are only approved GMO crops grown in Australia, there are a lot of imported products that contain GM ingredients. So, you need to shop smarter to ensure that you are buying GMO-free food. Here are tips on how to shop GM-free food.

Buy Food Labelled ‘Products of Australia”

One of the easiest ways to avoid shopping GMO foods buying foods labelled “product of Australia.” The label shows that the food has got all its ingredients sourced from Australia. Apart from cotton and canola, which are the two GM crops grown in Australia, any other ingredient is GM-free. That is one of the tips that can help you buy food from supermarket shelves faster without looking for other clarifications.

Watch Out When Buying Chips

If you love chips, you must check the type of oil that has been used to deep fry them. Some of the oils used for frying chips have GM ingredients in it. Avoid chips fried using oil sourced from cotton. Considering that cotton is one of GM crops in Australia, there are high chances that the oil has GM components in it. That is the reason why you should watch out when buying chips and other foods.

Avoid Food Products with Canola Oil

Canola oil is widely used in Australia for processing bread, chips, dips, margarine, and other bakery products. Considering that that canola is one of the GM crops grown in Australia, there are high chances of GM ingredients in it. So, avoid bakery products such as cakes unless they are not using canola oil.

Go organic

Going organic is one of the best ways to avoid GMO foods. Organic foods are foods that have been grown naturally without using chemical products such as pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. These are properties that make them extremely healthy for human consumption. So the chances of such foods carrying GMO components are very low. Fortunately, organic food is readily available in most Australian supermarkets. You can also buy it for cheap in the farmers’ market near you. Organic food is a little bit is expensive, but it is super healthy.

Buy More Fruits and Vegetable

abundant harvest of fruits and vegetables

Almost all fresh products in Australia are non-GMO. However, these are foods that are grown in Australia only. So, you can load up zucchini, broccoli, papaya, oranges, mangoes, and other fresh products. Buying from the farmers market is highly recommended because the chances of these fresh products being genetically modified are very low. Avoid imported fresh products at all costs if you want to go GMO-free.

Look for non-GMO-Verified Seal

If you can only buy from the supermarket, then you must check for the non-GMO verified seal on the product. Brands that sell food free of genetic modification have their products labelled for buyers to identify them easily. So, you need to look for verified seals that prove that the food is 100% GM-free.

Beware Of Additives

Some of the food additives could be GMO. If you see canola or cotton as some of the additives, you need to be careful. Canola and cotton are accepted GMOs by the Australian government. So, you should avoid such additives. Avoid imported additives such as corn, soy, and sugar beets because they are likely to be GMOs.

Due to the many health hazards associated with genetically modified food, we should try to avoid them. Although cotton and canola are the only GM crops grown in Australia, we are important a lot of genetically modified food from the international market. Therefore, you need to buy smart using if you want to go GMO-free.

Acid Rain: What Can We Do?

acid rain - what can we do

Acid rains or acid deposition is a global problem that is affecting many parts of the world. It causes serious environmental and health problems. It usually comes in the form of actual rain, fog, snow or a dry deposit. It contains high levels of acid than normal, which harms the soil, animal, plants and people in that ecosystem.

The good thing is that we can help improve the situation by reducing the harshness of this phenomenon. In this guide, we have rounded up some of the best ways we can change our lifestyles to decrease acidic rains.

Here are 6 ways we can change our lifestyle to prevent acid rains.

Reduce Energy Consumption

One of the ways we can contribute to decreasing acid rains is reducing our energy consumption. For every kilowatt unit of electricity that you consume, you indirectly contribute to the increase in acidic rains. By reducing your energy consumption, you will be playing a significant role in preventing acidic rains. There are simple changes we can make to save energy. First, you must shut off all electrical appliances that are not in use. Make sure that your HVAC system is only on when you really need it. Another appliance that you need to regulate its use is the electrical water heater. During the day, use natural light for your home or office. These measures will not only save the environment but will also save money.

Drive Less

One of the biggest contributors to acid rains is vehicles. We have millions of vehicles releasing acidic gases to the air at any time. If we can use our cars less, then it will contribute significantly to reducing acid rain. There are several ways that you can manage to drive less. First, walk for small distances instead of driving. If your place of work is not far from where you live, then consider walking instead of driving. If you can’t walk, you need to consider using public transport to go to work. With that, you will reduce the amount of fuel burnt and thus, less acidic gases to the air. You will also save money on fuel.

Using Alternative Fuel

alternative auto fuel

Fossil fuel is the primary source of sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen gases that form the acid rain. If we can reduce the reliance on fossil fuel, we can manage to reduce these rains. There are several alternative fuels that we can go for. Solar energy provides one of the cleanest fuels. It is renewable and does not release harmful and acidic gases. We can also use biogas to replace generator produced fuel. There is also the hydro and geothermal generated electricity which is eco-friendly. These are some of the cleaner alternative fuels that can help decrease acid rain.

Replace Appliances with Efficient Ones

As the appliance ages, its efficiency declines. That means it will need more energy to compensate for the lost efficiency. So. it will be using more electrical energy than needed to do the same work. The result is burning more fuel; hence, increasing acidic gases in the air. In other words, you will be contributing to creating harsher acid rain. If you have a refrigerator, furnace or an air conditioner that is ageing, then you need to replace it with a more efficient one. Replacing with a new one is highly recommended because its efficiency is still at peak.

Look For Energy Rating

When buying electrical appliances, it is essential to check the star rating. All electrical appliances in Australia have an energy star logo that shows how energy efficient they are. Appliances with higher energy-efficiency have more stars. To help decrease acid rain, you need to invest in the most energy-efficient machine. Such appliances consume less electrical energy to deliver the same results. In other words, less fuel will be burned to power the appliance. Therefore, you will reduce acidic gases released into the air when using a high energy rated appliance. In addition, make sure that the device also meets your need. Avoid buying large appliances to avoid energy wastage.

Use Windows Wisely

use windows wisely

Windows can help reduce your energy consumption. During the day, open your windows and remove curtains to let sunlight into the room. So. you don’t need to put lights on; hence, no electrical energy is used. During summers, you can open your windows to let cool winds from the outside cool your home instead of using an air conditioning system. But when it comes to winter, make sure that windows are properly closed to prevent heat from escaping. These are some of the ways you can use your house windows to decrease acid rain.

Acid rain will not only destroy your roof but will also expose you to serious health complications. The good thing is that we can help reduce its impact by simply changing our lifestyle. We can achieve this by avoiding things that contribute to the increase of sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen in the air.

Conserve Nature With These 6 Ways

6 ways to nature conservation

We are living at a time when the environmental damages are hitting back at us. From the unexpected long draughts, floods, to changing rain patterns, we are now paying for the decades of environmental damages. However, it is not too late. We can make the situation better by conserving nature.

It does not take much to conserve the environment. There are little things we can do in our daily life to make environmental conservation a success. We have rounded up some of the best ways that you can conserve the environment in your own small ways.

1. Reduce Water Consumption

water consumption

One of the ways that you can help to conserve nature is by reducing your water consumption. The water crisis across the globe has continued to grow every year. The worrying thing is that if nothing is done, there will be very little or no safe water for us in the not so far future. Therefore, conserving water is the duty of every person around the globe. There are ways that you can reduce the amount of water that we consume. First, turning off the tap when brushing, or shaving beards is one of the best tips to conserve water. Second, use the washing machine when it is filled with clothes. Third, use a dishwasher when it is filled with dishes. These are just a few simple ways that you can conserve nature.

2. Use Reusable Bags

reusable bags

Most people usually carry things using plastic bags, which get thrown out after the first use. That is the reason why plastic has been identified as one of the major contributors to nature pollution. Buying a reusable bag that is made from renewable raw material is highly recommended. These bags have a huge impact on the environment. First, you will help to reduce the production of plastic papers, which are not renewable and take hundreds of years to decompose. Second, you will help to reduce the amount of energy used for the production of bags.

3. Reduce Use Of Electricity

use of electricity

High consumption of electricity damages the environment, especially where diesel-powered generators are used to produce electricity. Therefore, the more electricity you use, the more damages you cause to the environment. Reducing the use of electricity is all about to avoid waste. Switch off the lights when you leave the house when you can use natural light. You should also avoid keeping electrical appliances on if you don’t need them. Last but not least is to avoid drying clothes using electricity and instead, sun-dry them. These are some of the ways that you can avoid electrical energy wastage.

4. Create A Compost

creating a compost

Composting is another way that you can help to conserve nature. We know the damage that landfills cause to the environment, including releasing dangerous chemicals. We can help reduce the amount of trash reaching landfills by composting. What you need is to separate trash right from your home. Put all decomposing waste, including food into the compost bin. The compost can be used as an organic manure for your gardens after it decomposes. It is usually a very rich manure for all types of plants. With composting, you will help to reduce litter in the environment. You will also reduce the energy used to transport trash and process it in the landfills.

5. Change Your Driving Habits

man driving a car

If you don’t know, vehicles are one of the biggest contributors to air pollution. We have millions of cars on our roads daily producing carbon gases that damage the environment. If you change your driving habits by driving less, we can help conserve the environment by reducing carbon emission. So, don’t use cars as a luxury but instead, use it to enhance your mobility. If the office is a walking distance, don’t use the car. You should also consider using public transport when necessary since it helps to reduce air pollution.

6. Plant Trees

tree planting

Trees are the lungs of the planet. Some of the problems that we are facing today, such as global warming are partly because of deforestation. So, we have a lot of carbon gases but very few trees to absorb it. By planting trees, we will be able to reduce the amount of carbon gas in the air. Coupled with efforts to reduce carbon gas emission, planting trees and growing vegetables in your garden will make the planet better for all of us.

Conserving nature does not require massive projects. You can do something small from where you are and make a huge impact on environmental conservation. These are just some of the simple but effective ways of conserving nature.

Countries That Have Banned GMO Crops Worldwide

countries that ban gmo crop

As the debate over the safety GMO food gets heated at the global stage, countries are divided over this matter. Some have approved the production and sale of GMO, while others have banned it. Countries such as Canada, China and the US have allowed the production of GMO food. However, many countries have banned the growing of genetically modified food for human consumption.

Here are some of the countries that have banned GMO crops worldwide:

Australia has banned the cultivation of most of the GMO crops. The only genetically modified crops that have been approved for cultivation is canola and cotton. Australia does not allow the growth of genetically modified foods such as fresh vegetables. However, the country has not burned the importation of some GMO foods. However, imported GM-food are properly labelled. But if you are buying food from the farmers’ market, then you are not at risk of being exposed to GM foods.

Japan government restricted the cultivation of the genetically modified crop in the country. So there are no GM seeds that are allowed into the country for cultivations. However, the country is importing large quantities of canola from Canada, which is one of the world’s largest producer of GM foods. Therefore, even if the country is not cultivating GMO foods, there are high chances that the population is being exposed to genetically modified food such as additives.

New Zealand

New Zealand has banned the cultivation of genetically modified food. However, they have allowed the importation of GM food. But the country has put strict regulation on the importation, development and testing GMO Foods. Currently, there is no fresh produce or meat sold in New Zealand that is genetically modified. For the importation, all the GM foods must be approved and labelled on the packaging. So you are guaranteed to get GMO-free food in New Zealand as they are they properly labelled.

Germany is one of the major opponents of GM food in Europe. The country discourages the cultivation of GMO crops. In fact, the country imposes strict liability for accidental contamination with genetically modified food. Germany’s regulation on GMO crops is with the stringent EU legislation. So if you are going to Germany, you are guaranteed to get GM-free in their stores according to the European Union regulation. However, they recently allowed genetically modified potato.

France is another country that has put strict regulation on the cultivation and sale of GMO foods. As a member state of the European Union, the country has its regulation in the broader framework of European regulation. However, the country has strict internal restrictions that control the production and sale of certain GM food.

Switzerland first banned genetically banned food back in 2005. Being a non-EU country, Switzerland has been able to regulate the production of GMO crops. Over the years, the country has been extending the ban due to the issue of safety of this food. In 2016, the Swiss cabinet improved the extension of the GMO food from 2017 to 2021. The only thing that the government allows the crop field trials on a case-by-case basis. However, this is done under very strict conditions.

Hungary has a GMO-free policy based on the scientifically proven side effects of these foods. The country has enacted regulations that prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified crops as well as the sale of GMO foods in the country.  The regulation ensures a GMO-free food chain. Hungary is indeed one of the countries where you don’t have to worry about eating genetically modified food.

santorini greece

In 2004, most of the prefectures in the country had declared their areas a GMO-free zone. In 2014, more than 27,000 citizens signed the popular Greenpeace Petition against the nationalisation of the GMO cultivation. In fact, recent studies have shown that more than 93% of the Greeks do not want cultivation or sale of genetically modified food in the country. The country also observes restriction against GM-maize as most of the EU members.

The safety of genetically modified organisms is the major reason why countries have banned this food. Although some countries have a partial ban, GM food production and sale is controlled by strict regulations. So, if you are planning to visit any of the listed countries, you will be safe from GMO foods.

Generally, the controversy over genetically modified foods is complicated. With the use of technology and the knowledge of humans, people continuously create new inventions that actually can help the nature. There are now alternative electrical energy sources that can relatively help people to have a greener lifestyle. Also, air pollution can now turn into an ink which you can know more about with Home Energy Audit Tempe and Air-Ink. There are many more inventions and this time, they hope to improve the food sources of people. GM engineers invented new genes that have been created in the laboratory and added it or reconfigured it on the genes of the crop plants to create a new one. Is it harmful or helpful to nature? We don’t know yet, but when it comes to the health of human being, you should know first when, how, and why to avoid these GMO foods. Before taking a risk, perhaps you should know what is GMO and what are the effects of this on the human body.

Scientific modification on plants is not new in this world. Since the time began, genetic modification is a natural evolution in the plants and animals. It means that the plants and animals that could adapt to the changing environment will survive and pass their genes on to their offspring and the least fit do not survive. Even farmers do the kind of genetic modification that has been helping them improve crops for generations. They separate the good seeds to use for next year’s crop. Seed companies are also contributing to these genetic modifications.

But here’s the problem, the chemical manufacturers and other companies involved in this invention, their goal is clearly not to produce a tastier and juicier apple and tomato, or more nourishing corn, but rather to modify food crops that will be resistant to the pesti¬cides. And when the people support these GMO foods, the weeds die, the crops live, and the companies which manufacture pesticides and other chemicals used in this genetic modification make money. Then, what do we do with those crops that we actually eat every day? Many of the cereals, snacks, and processed products that we and our kids eat are made up of crops. Since the pesticides and herbicides and other chemicals used in GMO have the potential to be toxic to humans, and espe¬cially to children, it follows that these GMOs have the potential to be harmful to us.

Whatever their reason for creating such harmful substances, the fact that these chemicals are dangerous to our body means we should avoid them. You should not let yourself and your family most especially the children to eat GMO foods. According to the World Health Organization, glyphosate which is the herbicide that mostly used in GMO is a probable human carcinogen a chemical that is capable of causing cancer in humans.

The use of these chemicals in the United States of America has increased by more than 2000% in 25 years. To stop the spread of these chemicals and GMO products is to start in you and in your home.

Let us help and support each other in the fight against dangerous genetically modified foods!

Technology is really changing our lives and oftentimes, it provides a lot of benefits. We cannot deny how much technology has improved our everyday lives by leaps and bounds. However, there is also a downside to technology. It can also be damaging to us.

Biotechnology is one of these. It has given rise to GMOs or genetically-modified organisms. These refer to organisms with altered DNA such as crops which have been modified to improve resistance to pests, droughts, harsh environments, among others. Unfortunately, since these are used as food, its new genetic make-up can have harmful effects.

This is why Babes Against Biotech formed an organization that will encourage people to seek help in calling for GMO-free food. We cannot allow these plants, be it from farms, gardens, or grown in specially designed glass houses to endanger our health because of GMO experimentation. Countries, towns and islands can be poisoned by these agrochemically produced crops. We must all be careful of how we impact the environment whether it is the car we drive or the services we use like Yuma HVAC install or Tucson garage door repair.

Hawaii, for example has an open air laboratory for testing these genetically modified crops. While developing these pesticides resistant GMOs, the surrounding communities have been exposed to unpleasant amounts of restricted pesticides. They continue to allow these genetically-engineered chemical experiments to take place there which causes a lot of problems for the people living there. We can’t just let these continue when it poses a lot of risks for people.

The thing is, most processed foods have GMO additives. The problem is, if genetically modified foods are known to be toxic to animals, what kind of effect can it pose to us humans, who eat these kinds of foods? We eat to be healthy and not to be ill.

Our organization, as an active advocate against GMO foods, intend to find solutions for the agricultural crisis in Hawaii brought about by genetically-engineered crops. We seek to educate community leaders, farmers and small business owners on the effect of GMOs. While doing so, we attempt to speak our minds about biotechnology as well.

To know more about GMO and Hawaii being an open air genetically modified laboratory, visit our website. Look through our solutions on agricultural problems too. We strongly suggest that you help us spread the word on the ill effects of biotechnology and genetically modified foods. Let us not wait for the moment that these things will cause us more problems than they already have. Learn more about GMO and help our organization do something about our food supplies.

Through our website, you can be educated and warned about the ills of biotechnology and GMO. Check out its risks and hazards. Help us not risk people’s lives with these experimented organic compounds.

Please do consider supporting our organization. You can also join by being a member of Babes Against Biotech. Contributions or personal help will be enough to take part in this community. Please donate and give support for our events, programs and missions. Help spread information about the health risks of genetically modified foods.
